OIT Operations Program Director Matthew Eizenga is being recognized for the OIT Core Value of Innovation. Matthew recently led a complex, high-impact project that impacted more than 18 state agencies. His creative approach didn't just solve a one-time problem; it led to measurable, long-term efficiency gains across multiple state technology systems.
Innovation at OIT requires more than just technical skill; it requires a specific mindset. Matthew’s approach to work is rooted in transparency and a relentless drive to understand the why behind the how.
Most Coloradans will never have the chance to meet Matthew, but his work impacts systems that millions of residents interact with daily.
“When systems run reliably, and (state) agencies have what they need, citizens experience a government that works,” Matthew says. “It’s like tuning instruments before a concert — the applause comes from the preparatory work required to create the perfect harmony. My work helps agencies focus on mission-driven outcomes instead of struggling with access and accounts issues.”
Matthew’s favorite part of his job is bringing calmness and clarity to complex issues.
“Every day feels like a creative jam session: observing, listening, and figuring out the real problem beneath the surface,” Matthew says. “Whether it’s untangling a long-standing technical issue, helping an agency partner, or guiding a team through a complex decision, I enjoy finding ways to simplify, clarify and make things more sustainable. When I can make someone’s day easier, that’s my version of a hit record.”
If he were to advise a new OIT employee, his message would include these four components:
- Be kind and curious: Approach every interaction as an opportunity to learn and grow.
- Ask the obvious questions: Sometimes the simplest questions reveal the deepest insights.
- Speak up: If you notice something that could be improved, speak up.
- Collaborate: OIT is full of people who want to help. Show up with an open mind, and you’ll find the work is vastly rewarding—even when it’s complex.
Through his leadership and innovative spirit, Matthew Eizenga continues to ensure that the "music" of Colorado's state government stays perfectly in tune.
