Getting Started with Accessibility Governance

Impact

While not everyone will be remediating accessibility issues or creating accessible content, everyone will have a part to play in changing your organizational culture. Successfully incorporating accessibility into your operations will involve many people in all aspects of your organization’s administration and operations. This is where governance for accessibility comes into play.

How to Get Started

When you complete the planning activities laid out in the governance section of your IT Accessibility Adoption Plan, your organization will ensure that accessibility-related roles and responsibilities across the organization are well defined. To get started with this process:

  • Define what governance means for your organization.
  • Begin to define roles and responsibilities for accessibility planning and implementation.
  • Identify directives, policies, procedures, and guidelines that will need to be in place (use the six core criteria within the accessibility checklist to inform this work).
  • Create an Accessibility Workgroup that includes point people who will be responsible for implementing and maintaining accessibility compliance of the technology within their domain. The most effective group will be a multidisciplinary group of organization employees at varying levels of the org chart who can help plan for the six core criteria, implement accessibility plans, and lead cultural change.
  • Identify an executive sponsor who will be the accountable party that the accessibility point people will report to and communicate with about progress, opportunities, and resource requirements.
